1978 Yamaha YTR-636

$1250.00

The Yamaha YTR-636 is a vintage professional-grade trumpet produced primarily between 1977 and 1982. It occupies a legendary spot in Yamaha’s history as one of the direct ancestors to the famous "Bobby Shew" Z-series and the modern Custom line.

1. Design & Playability: The "Schilke Connection"

During this era, Yamaha’s professional trumpets were heavily influenced by Renold Schilke, who consulted for the company.

  • Step-Bore Design: Like the Schilke B6/B7, the YTR-636 features a Medium Bore (.445") that "steps up" into a larger tuning slide and bell. This creates a horn that is incredibly easy to blow (low resistance) while maintaining a very precise, centered high register.

  • Lightweight Construction: It is a lightweight horn designed for commercial, jazz, and lead playing. It "speaks" quickly, making it ideal for fast, agile passages.

2. Key Specifications

  • Bell: 5-inch Yellow Brass (two-piece). The bell is slightly larger than the modern standard (usually 4.8"), which helps broaden the sound so it doesn't become too shrill.

  • Finish: Most common in "Gold Epoxy Lacquer," though silver-plated versions (YTR-736) exist.

  • Valves: High-quality Yamaha nickel-plated pistons. Unlike the older "Yamalloy" valves found in some 1970s Yamahas that were prone to corrosion, the 636 valves are generally very reliable if maintained.

3. Legacy: The "Z" Ancestor

The YTR-636 was the horn played by many top lead players of the late 70s (including Bobby Shew and Roger Ingram early in their careers) before Yamaha officially launched the 6310Z and later the 8310Z.

  • The "636B" Variant: You may see a model labeled YTR-636B. The "B" version was a specific tweak (often cited as having a red brass bell or a tighter flare) aimed even more specifically at lead players who wanted maximum control in the extreme upper register.

This particular instrument has been refinished with gold epoxy lacquer. Valves and slides operate smoothly and quickly.
